GTA 6 gets a CERO Z in Japan, so every major age rating is now in. Vox explains what they actually mean

Japan’s ratings board has given GTA 6 a CERO Z, adults only, and the descriptors list only violence and crime. That has people asking whether Japan is getting an edited version. Vox goes through the Japan news, the GTA V precedent and every rating GTA 6 has picked up around the world.

Breaking news from the department of absolutely nobody being surprised: GTA 6 is rated for adults. In Japan, specifically, it has just picked up a CERO Z, which is the strictest rating that board hands out and means 18 and over only. I know. Shocking. A game about two criminals robbing their way across a fake Florida is not for children. Somebody alert the press.

But there is a real story in here, and it is not the letter Z. It is what the rating leaves out.

What happened in Japan

Japanese site Game Spark spotted it on October 17: the GTA 6 listings on the Japanese PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store switched from "rating pending" to CERO Z (18+ only). The content descriptors shown are Crime and Violence. That is it. Two words.

Now compare that to the rest of the world, where the boards have been listing things like sex scenes, nudity and drug use. Japan’s listing does not mention any of that. Same game, same month, very different list. And that is why people have started asking the question.

So is GTA 6 being censored in Japan?

Here is the honest answer, and I want you to read it twice: nobody knows. Rockstar has not announced any changes for the Japanese version. Not one. Everything you see on social media right now is people reading tea leaves in a store listing.

What we do have is history. GTA V was also rated CERO Z in Japan, and its descriptors were the same two: crime and violence. And the Japanese release of GTA V was not identical to everyone else’s. Game Spark notes that sexual scenes were changed and some graphic violence was removed. It also launched in Japan a few weeks after the rest of the world.

So when the GTA 6 listing shows up with the exact same two descriptors as GTA V, people draw the obvious line between them. That is a reasonable guess. It is still a guess. If Rockstar confirms anything, we will tell you. Until then, it is speculation.

Every GTA 6 rating so far

Japan was one of the last big markets to clear. Here is where everything stands, as reported:

  • United States and Canada (ESRB): Mature 17+. The descriptors reportedly cover violence, blood and gore, sexual content, nudity, drug and alcohol use and strong language, plus in-game purchases.
  • UK and Europe (PEGI): 18.
  • Germany (USK): 18.
  • Australia (Classification Board): R18+. If you saw an "X18+" listing a while back, that was reported to be a filing error. R18+ is the one that stands.
  • New Zealand: R18, with the advice "graphic violence, drug use, offensive language, sex scenes and nudity".
  • South Korea: 19+.
  • Brazil (ClassInd): 18.
  • Japan (CERO): Z, 18+ only, listing crime and violence.

Every major board on the planet has looked at this game and said "adults". Which brings me to my next point.

What this means for you

If you are in Japan: keep an eye on Rockstar’s official channels before launch. If the Japanese version is different, that is where you will hear it first. The release date is not affected. It is still November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

If you are a parent: the rating is the useful bit of information here, so use it. This is the most adult game Rockstar has made, and every ratings board agrees. The store listings in your region spell out exactly why.

If you are everyone else: nothing changes. It unlocks at midnight Eastern on November 19, and you have already booked the day off, because you read my last piece and you are a person who learns.

The bottom line

If Rockstar says anything official about the Japanese version, or any region, we will cover it here first. Until then: the rating is confirmed, the edits are not, and the launch is 32 days away.
