GTA 6 character customization: what Rockstar has confirmed on clothes, hair, tattoos, and Jason and Lucia's changing bodies

Clothes, hair, nails, ink and, per Rockstar's developers, food, exercise and sleep that change Jason's and Lucia's bodies. What is confirmed and what is not.

GTA 6 has no character creator, but it does let you change who Jason and Lucia are, in two layers: what they wear, and what happens to their bodies. The first layer is a wardrobe, a salon and a tattoo parlour that Rockstar has shown in its own screenshots. The second is newer and more interesting: Rockstar's developers have said that food affects weight, exercise builds muscle, and a few days without sleep shows on the face. I say what is confirmed and what is my opinion, as always.

One note on sourcing before anything else. The body details come from an interview with senior Rockstar developers in Dazed, published on August 26, 2026, and were reported the same day by Kotaku, Dexerto and Video Games Chronicle. I have read those reports, not the Dazed interview itself, so I treat the details as the developers' words relayed by the press. Everything about shops and looks comes from Rockstar's own screenshots and announcements.

The wardrobe layer: confirmed

Eve has already gone through every outfit and shop in detail, so here is the short version. Rockstar has named three places, and all three are Ultimate Edition exclusives:

  • Stock 305 Clothing, described by Rockstar as Stockyard's destination for elevated streetwear.
  • Sara's Unisex Salon, with signature styles including facial hair for Jason and makeup and nails for Lucia.
  • Electric Fang Tattoo, with more than fifty designs by the art collective FAILE.

The pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack, adds outfits and hairstyles for both leads to every edition. Clothes also have a rule attached: the police track what you are wearing, and a complete change of outfit clears that lead, as the wanted level page explains.

The body layer: what the developers said

According to the reports, the developers described these effects on Jason and Lucia:

  • Food affects weight. What your character eats shows up on their body.
  • Exercise builds and tones muscle. The change is visible.
  • Sleep and stress change the face. Long stretches away from bed, such as hiding from the police or a multi-day bender, alter their facial features.

Rob Nelson, Rockstar North's co-studio head and head of development, is quoted in the Dexerto report saying the team wants "to enable as much self-expression as possible, without losing the essence of the characters." That second half matters, and I come back to it below.

The San Andreas comparison

Kotaku framed all this as a return of the weight and muscle system from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. That is the press's comparison, not Rockstar's, but it is a fair one. In 2004, CJ got heavier when he ate badly, leaner and stronger when he used the gym, and your choices showed on his body for the rest of the game. No GTA since has done anything like it.

The nearer ancestor may be Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur's weight changes with what he eats and his hair and beard keep growing. Dexerto's report describes GTA 6 as expanding the body systems from that game. Same studio, same habit: treat the body as something the player looks after, not a fixed model.

What Rockstar has not said

  • How much it changes. No figures on how quickly weight moves or how far muscle goes.
  • Whether it changes gameplay. San Andreas made body shape part of the game's stats. Nothing has been said about GTA 6.
  • Where you train. No gym, no routine, no activity has been named.
  • Whether other characters react. Nothing on how NPCs treat a heavier or fitter Jason.
  • What the Standard Edition has. The three shops are Ultimate Edition exclusives. Rockstar has not described the standard clothing, hair and tattoo options.
  • Whether you can choose. Jason and Lucia are fixed characters, so there is no body-type slider.

My read

This is opinion, and I will keep it short. A game that remembers what you ate is a game that reads your appearance as information, and information is what I do. In Vice City, in the mid-1980s, appearance is a currency. Everyone in the screenshots dresses to a code, and the gang uniforms are exactly that. Add weight, muscle and a tired face, and the player's look stops being a costume you put on and becomes a record of how you have been living.

The line about "the essence of the characters" is the part I am watching. My guess is that the changes are bounded: noticeable, readable, but never so far that Lucia stops looking like Lucia. That would fit a game with two fixed leads and a story about how they change. It is a guess, and I will update this page the moment Rockstar shows a gym, a mirror or a tired face.

Quick answers

Can you gain weight in GTA 6?

Rockstar developers told Dazed in an interview published August 26, 2026 that food affects Jason and Lucia's weight. Rockstar has not published how fast it changes, how far it goes, or whether it affects gameplay.

Is GTA 6 bringing back the San Andreas weight system?

Rockstar has not used that comparison. What its developers described is similar in spirit: food affects weight and exercise builds and tones muscle. The San Andreas link comes from the press, not from Rockstar.

Can you build muscle in GTA 6?

Yes, according to the same interview: exercise visibly builds and tones the characters' muscles. Rockstar has not said where you exercise or how long it takes.

Does lack of sleep change how your character looks?

According to the developer interview, long stretches without sleep, such as hiding from police or a multi-day bender, change Jason's and Lucia's faces. No visuals of this have been shown.

Can you create your own character in GTA 6?

No. You play as Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Customization is clothes, hair, makeup, nails, tattoos and, per the developers, how food, exercise and sleep change their bodies.

Which GTA 6 customization is Ultimate Edition only?

The three shops Rockstar has named, Stock 305 for clothes, Sara's Unisex Salon for hair, makeup and nails, and Electric Fang Tattoo, are Ultimate Edition exclusives. Rockstar has not said what the Standard Edition offers.
