GTA 6 pre-load guide: what to do before November 12, and what the box edition does differently
Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 can download from November 12, a week before launch. The install size is still unannounced. Here is the checklist: space to clear, console settings, the download-code box, and what pre-load does not get you.
Rockstar has confirmed that digital pre-orders of Grand Theft Auto VI on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S can download from November 12, 2026, seven days before the game unlocks on November 19. No clock time has been given, so expect the download to appear at some point that day. Pre-load is not early access: the files sit locked until your region's unlock time, and Take-Two has said no edition plays early.
This week
- Free 200 to 250 GB. Rockstar has not published an install size; estimates run from 120 to 200 GB, and the 676 GB images were fakes. Usable space is less than the box says: about 667 GB on a launch PS5, 802 GB on a Series X, 364 GB on a 512 GB Series S. The download-size story has the maths.
- Check the pre-order. Right account, right region: the game unlocks for a whole region at one instant, so the account's region decides your start time. See unlock times.
- If you ordered the box, check the delivery date. The physical Standard Edition ships from November 12 and contains a download code, not a disc. It cannot start downloading until the box arrives and the code is redeemed, so a delivery that slips to the 18th means a launch night spent downloading.
November 12 to 18
- Start the pre-load the day it appears. A week is plenty on any connection, but a slow line that waits until the 18th will not make it: 200 GB is roughly 18 to 22 hours at 25 Mbps, 9 to 11 at 50 Mbps, 4.5 to 5.5 at 100 Mbps, 2 to 3 at 200 Mbps.
- Let the console download while asleep. On PS5, turn on automatic downloads and "Stay connected to the internet" so it pulls in rest mode. On Xbox, use Sleep rather than full shutdown.
- Check the storefront for the real size and a day-one patch. Expect the number to appear by the 12th.
- Read the ground. The map and the wanted level guide are the two things worth knowing before the first mission.
Launch night
Find your region in the unlock table, convert the UTC instant to your clock, and set the alarm for that rather than for midnight where you live. For the United States that is 05:00 UTC on November 19: midnight Eastern, 9 PM Pacific on the 18th. Our home page countdown runs on US Eastern.
What pre-load does not do
It does not play early, it does not change your edition, and it does not add the Vintage Vice City Pack if you buy after November 20. It is a download, started early so that launch night is spent playing.
