How big is the GTA 6 download? File size, console storage, and how long it will take
Rockstar has not published a GTA 6 install size. Estimates run from 120 to 200 GB. Here is how much space to clear, why the 676 GB screenshots are fake, and how long the pre-load will take on your connection.

Rockstar has not published an install size for Grand Theft Auto VI. As of mid-October the PlayStation Store listing shows no storage figure and the Xbox Store listing shows a 328 MB placeholder. Working estimates from outlets run from about 120 GB to 200 GB, which would make it larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's 105 GB. A real number should appear on the storefronts by the time pre-load opens on November 12.
The 676 GB screenshot is fake
Two images did the rounds claiming install sizes of 676 GB and 750 GB. Both were debunked. Neither figure appears on any storefront, and a game that size would not fit on a launch PS5 at all. Plan around 200 GB plus a day-one patch, not 700.
How much space you actually have
Usable space is less than the number on the box: about 667 GB on a launch PS5, 802 GB on an Xbox Series X, and 364 GB on a 512 GB Series S. Clearing 200 to 250 GB before November 12 covers the game and a day-one patch with room to spare. If you are on a Series S, that is most of the drive, so decide now what goes.
Make the console download while you sleep
On PS5, turn on automatic downloads and "Stay connected to the internet" so the pre-load runs in rest mode. On Xbox, use Sleep rather than full shutdown. Pre-load is not early access; the files stay locked until your region's unlock time.
How long it will take
Rough download times for 200 GB:
- 25 Mbps: 18 to 22 hours
- 50 Mbps: 9 to 11 hours
- 100 Mbps: 4.5 to 5.5 hours
- 200 Mbps: 2 to 3 hours
- 500 Mbps: about an hour
- 1 Gbps: under 30 minutes on a good night
Start the pre-load the day it appears. A week is plenty on any connection, but a slow line that waits until the 18th will not make launch night.
The boxed edition downloads too
The physical Standard Edition has no disc; it ships from November 12 with a download code, so the full download applies to it as well, and it cannot start until the box arrives. Details on the editions are in How much does GTA 6 cost?.
