Opinion: I bought a PS5 for one game, booked the days off, predicted PSN would crash, and then Rolo fact-checked me
Vox booked two days off for GTA 6 and was sure a PSN login crash would ruin them. Then Rolo checked the facts. GTA 6 plays offline, and the only real mistake was Vox's calendar.

Heads up: this is Vox with an opinion, not a news report. The facts are real and sourced. Several of my opinions did not survive contact with them, and I have left the wreckage in.
Let me tell you where I am in life. I own a PlayStation 5 with one game pre-ordered and nothing else on it. I have a receipt on my fridge. And I have two days of annual leave booked: Thursday, November 19, and Friday, November 20. Approved. In writing. By a manager who, I remind you, reads this site.
I did everything right. I took my own advice from the launch-day plan: no fake cough, no dead aunt, a proper booking through the proper system. I felt like an adult. It lasted about four days.
The prediction
Then the fear arrived. Here is what I wrote first, and what I believed with my whole chest:
On launch night, PlayStation Network falls over. Everyone with a PS5 presses the same button at the same minute, the sign-in screen spins forever, and nobody can play the game they paid for. Two days of annual leave, spent staring at a loading circle.
I had evidence. Confirmed: PSN went down worldwide on February 8 and 9, 2025, for about a day. People could not sign in or play online, and Sony gave PlayStation Plus members five extra days by way of apology. Also confirmed: GTA Online launched on October 1, 2013, two weeks after GTA V, and players could not connect, could not save, and in some cases lost their characters. Rockstar gave out GTA$500,000 as a sorry. Very kind. It did not give anyone their evening back.
So I sent it to Rolo, proudly, as a finished column.
Then Rolo fact-checked me
Rolo does the hardware on this site. Rolo is always right, which is getting tiresome. Rolo replied in under four minutes, with sources.
Fact one: the PlayStation Store lists GTA 6 as a single-player game with "Offline play enabled". Rockstar has not said either way, but nothing official says you have to be logged in to play the story. You need the internet to download it, and PlayStation checks your purchase. After that, on your main console, it runs whether PSN is up or not.
Fact two: you can make sure of that tonight. On PS5, go to Settings, Users and Accounts, Other, Console Sharing and Offline Play, and choose Enable. That console can then play the games you have bought and downloaded, even if PSN is having the worst day of its life. It works on one PS5 at a time. I have one PS5. I did it while Rolo watched.
Fact three: if PSN does go down, what you lose is the social bit. Signing in, trophies syncing, your friends list, party chat, the share button, the store, and any patch that has not downloaded yet. Annoying. Not fatal. The game itself, Rolo says, should open and play.
So my big prediction has been downgraded. PSN might still wobble on the 19th. Sony knows the date as well as we do, and it would be the busiest night in its history. But if it wobbles, I will still be in Vice City. I just will not be able to tell anyone about it, or collect a trophy for it, which, now I write it down, is how I have spent most of my adult life anyway.
The real miscalculation
Here is the part Rolo did not need to check, because I worked it out on my own at two in the morning.
I booked Thursday because Thursday is unlock day. That felt obvious. But the game unlocks at midnight Eastern, based on the PlayStation Store's own timestamps, and pre-load opens a week earlier, on November 12. Rolo says the download is reportedly 210 GB. If I pre-load properly, the game is sitting on my console, ready, the moment it unlocks.
Which means I will start playing at midnight. On a Wednesday night. Before my leave even begins. And I will still be playing at 4 a.m., when the alarm I forgot to switch off goes off for a work day I do not have.
I did not need Thursday for the launch. I needed it to recover from Wednesday. These are different things, and I have booked the wrong one.
The small print
Things nobody has confirmed, that I am now worrying about in a calmer, more fact-checked way:
- A day-one patch. Not announced. I would still bet my lunch on one, and that does need PSN. Pre-load early, leave room, and let it download.
- Unlock times outside the US. Rockstar has not published a full schedule. The US time comes from the PlayStation Store. If you are anywhere else, check our unlock page and set two alarms.
- Whether PSN wobbles at all. It might not. If it holds up perfectly, I will claim I always said it would.
My verdict
Switch on offline play tonight. Pre-load on the 12th. And book the day after the launch, not the day of it, because the launch is a Wednesday night and you know exactly what you are going to do with it.
Which brings me to the happiest discovery of my month. While I was in the leave system, rearranging my mistakes, I scrolled down. And there, at the bottom, in grey, a number I had never once looked at.
I have got three weeks of vacation I must use this year.
Three weeks. Use it or lose it. The company actually wants me to go away. I have never been more motivated by an HR policy in my life. So, PSN can do what it likes on the 19th. I will be on that sofa on the 20th, and the 23rd, and probably most of December. Vice City can take its time. So can I.
If you still have not sorted out your own launch week, the launch guide has every date. Check your leave balance while you are at it. You may be richer than you think.
