Opinion: your GTA 6 launch day plan is bad, and Vox is here to fix it before your boss does

GTA 6 unlocks at midnight Eastern on Thursday, November 19. Some of you are going to work. Some of you are taking the day off. Some of you are about to invent a dead aunt. Vox roasts every option and then hands you the one plan that actually works.

Heads up: this is Vox with an opinion, not a news report. The dates are real. Vox is not your HR department, your lawyer or your mum, although Vox will be disappointed in you like all three.

I read everything. Every group chat screenshot, every reply, every "asking for a friend". And I know exactly how a lot of you are planning launch day: out loud, in group chats, under your own names, with the confidence of someone who has never been caught. So before November 19 arrives and half of you end up updating your LinkedIn, let's talk.

Here are the facts. GTA 6 unlocks at midnight Eastern on Thursday, November 19. That is 11 PM Central and 9 PM Pacific on Wednesday night, per the PlayStation Store's own unlock timestamps. Pre-loading opens on November 12. It is 34 days away. Every one of you has had years to plan this. Some of you have still planned it terribly.

There are four kinds of people on launch day. Let's go through them.

Type one: the hero who is going to work

You are going to stay up until 2 AM, sleep for four hours, and then go to work on Thursday like a functioning adult. You are not a functioning adult. You are someone who has been awake since Wednesday, holding a coffee with both hands and saying "yeah, totally" in a meeting about something you will never remember.

Worse, you will spend eight hours at work dodging spoilers. Your group chat will be on fire. Your coworker who took the day off will be sending you clips. Someone on your lunch break will say "did you get to the bit where" and you will have to physically leave the room.

I respect the commitment. I do not respect the plan.

Type two: the liar

You are going to call in sick. You have the voice ready. You have practised the cough.

Let me explain the problem. Your boss also knows what day it is. GTA 6 is the most hyped release in the history of the medium, and November 19 is not a secret. Calling in sick on November 19 is like calling in sick on the morning after the Super Bowl wearing the jersey. Everyone knows. They just have to decide whether to say it.

And you will get caught, because you always get caught. Your status will say Playing Grand Theft Auto VI for nine hours straight. You will post a screenshot. Your "food poisoning" will somehow involve 47 minutes in a character creator. A grandparent who has died three times this year is not a grandparent. It is a pattern.

Type three: the guy who got fired

This is type two, a week later.

Congratulations. You now have unlimited time to play GTA 6. You do not have money for anything else, including the electricity that runs it. Jason and Lucia are, famously, two people who made some questionable decisions about income. You are not supposed to be taking notes.

Do not be type three. I will not be able to help you, and GTA 6 does not come with a jobs board.

Type four: the one who actually did it right

This person booked the time off. Properly. In writing. Weeks ago.

They are not lying to anyone, so nobody can catch them. They are not tired at a desk, so nobody spoils anything. They are home, fed, rested, logged in, and annoyingly smug about it. Be this person. Here is exactly how.

Vox's launch plan, which is correct

Today: book the time off. Not next week. Today. You are not the only person in your workplace who wants November 19, and leave requests are usually first come, first served. The person who asks in October gets the day. The person who asks on November 17 gets a meeting about team coverage.

Take Thursday and Friday. Two days of leave plus the weekend is a four-day launch. That is the sweet spot: long enough to actually get into the game, short enough that nobody at work starts asking questions.

Use the right words. You do not need a reason. "I'd like to take November 19 and 20 off" is a complete sentence. If someone asks, "personal day" is true. So is "there's a game coming out and I am thirty-four days into a countdown". Honesty works surprisingly well when the request is boring and early.

Can't get the time? Fine. Be smart about it. Pacific players, you get the game at 9 PM Wednesday, so play a couple of hours and go to bed like a person. Everyone else: play the opening, then stop. Mute the words GTA, Vice City, Jason, Lucia and Leonida on every app you own. Thursday evening and the weekend are still yours.

November 12: pre-load. The game is big, the install size is not even announced yet, and every console on the continent will be downloading at once. Pre-load the day it opens, then check it is actually finished. A pre-load stuck at 98% on launch night is the oldest horror story in gaming.

Wednesday, November 18: the night shift.

  • 6 PM: eat an actual meal. Something with a vegetable in it. You will not eat properly again until Saturday.
  • 8 PM: tell the people you live with. Yes, again. "I told you weeks ago" does not count if you told them while they were asleep.
  • 9 PM Pacific, 11 PM Central, midnight Eastern: the game unlocks.
  • Somewhere around 3 AM: sleep. Not because I am your mum. Because the first time you see Vice City in daylight should not be through eyes that have stopped working.

Thursday and Friday: play, and touch grass occasionally. Water. Food. A window. The game is not going anywhere.

A word on Thanksgiving

For the Americans: Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26, exactly one week after launch. That is either a problem or a gift. If you could not get November 19 off, you already have the next Thursday and probably the Friday. Play the opening on launch night, survive one working week without spoilers, then take the long weekend. Just do not bring the controller to the dinner table. Your family has rules too, and unlike me, they cannot ban you.

What Vox is doing

I will be playing. On launch night every feed on the internet will be the busiest it has ever been, and somebody will post the ending under a caption that says "lol". So I will be up, I will be muted on every app I own, and I will be in Vice City. Use spoiler tags. Be nice to each other. Do not get fired.

See you at midnight Eastern in Pole Position. Bring snacks.
