The scariest shit Rockstar ever put in a GTA, and what might be waiting in Leonida's swamp at night
Ten days to Halloween, so Bama goes back through the ghost on Mount Gordo, the killer who kept count on the rocks, the cannibals up Chiliad, the thing in the ice, and the night folk in Red Dead's bayou, then looks at the Grassrivers screenshots and asks what Rockstar might have put out there after dark.

Same rule as always. If Rockstar showed it, I say so. If it's me guessin', I say that too. And I'll tell you up front: when it comes to GTA 6, this whole piece is me guessin', because Rockstar has not shown one spooky thing in Leonida. Not a ghost, not a myth, not a cabin with the lights off. That's fine. They never show you the scary stuff. You find it.
Ten days to Halloween, and I've been thinkin' about how a company that makes crime games keeps sneakin' horror into 'em. Not jump scares. The slow kind. The kind where you're drivin' up a mountain at night for no reason and you see somethin' you weren't meant to. So here's the list, oldest ghost to newest, and then a look at the swamp.
The woman on Mount Gordo
Confirmed, and you can go do it tonight if you still have GTA V installed, which you do. Climb to the top of Mount Gordo, up in the northeast of the map, between 11 PM and midnight by the game clock. There's a word written on the rock in blood: JOCK. And over it, if the hour's right, a woman in a white dress, just standin' there, lookin' at you. Get close and she's gone.
She's Jolene Cranley-Evans, wife of Jock Cranley, the stuntman turned politician whose campaign ads you've skipped a hundred times, and the story the game tells in pieces is that he pushed her off that cliff and got away with it. That's the Rockstar way. The ghost ain't the scary part. The scary part is that the man who made her is on your TV runnin' for governor.
The killer who kept count
Confirmed. Out by Sandy Shores there's a rock near the Senora National Park sign with a poem on it that reads like a man countin' his victims, and when you walk up to it the game plays children singin'. That's the Infinity Killer, Merle Abrahams, and his count was eight. Go lookin' and you'll find where he kept 'em, weighted down off the coast, and the house where he wrote on the walls. There's no mission, no reward, no marker on the map. It's just there, for the people who go lookin'. I grew up around folks who tell stories like that about a real house down a real road, and Rockstar got the feelin' exactly right: nobody tells you, you just hear.
The ones who eat people
Confirmed. Up in the Chiliad wilderness there's a camp of old men called the Altruists who'll pay Trevor for the hitchhikers he brings 'em, and you work out pretty quick what they want 'em for. Keep deliverin' and eventually you get invited in, and it goes the way you'd expect. It's the most Red Dead thing in GTA V, and it's played straight, which is why it works.
The thing in the ice
Confirmed, and most people drove right past it. In the prologue, the North Yankton bank job, before you cross the train tracks, there's a way down the hill to a frozen river. Walk out on it and there's an alien under the ice, lookin' up. Stay too long and the mission fails, which is Rockstar's way of sayin' you weren't supposed to be there. Then it's gone, because you never go back to North Yankton. First twenty minutes of a game people played for twelve years, and they hid a body in the ice.
Bigfoot, twice
Here's one for the folks my age. Bigfoot was never in San Andreas. Not once. Every kid on every playground in 2005 swore his cousin saw it up Back o' Beyond, and Rockstar never put it in. So in V they had their fun. In the stranger mission The Last One, Franklin tracks a Sasquatch through the woods and it turns out to be a man in a suit who just wants to be left alone. And in Predator, when Michael's sittin' on the hill with the thermal scope, there's a heat signature in the trees, lower right, shaped like somethin' that ain't a deer, and it fades before you can get there. Confirmed, both. Which one's real is your business.
The bayou, which is the one that matters
This is where I slow down, because Red Dead Redemption 2 has a swamp, and it's the closest thing Rockstar has ever built to Leonida's Grassrivers.
Confirmed, all of it. Out in Bluewater Marsh, past Bayou Nwa, there's a ghost called Agnes Dowd, who shows up late at night in a pale dress, glowin' green through the fog, mutterin' to herself about somethin' that happened a long time ago. There's a woman kneelin' in white who starts cryin' when you get near, and when you go to help her, that's the trap, because that's when the Night Folk come out of the trees. The Night Folk are a family of hunters in the marsh who only work after dark, with snares and knives and bodies strung up in the cypress, and they don't say a word. Up at Bayall Edge there's a cabin with a paintin' in it that finishes itself while you watch, and the face it paints is the Strange Man from the first game, who may also be in the mirror behind you. And in the Roanoke woods at night you can hear people whisperin' and never find who.
Add the plague expansion from 2010, Undead Nightmare, where the whole of the first Red Dead's map rotted and John Marston rode around burnin' it, and you've got a studio that knows exactly how to do fear. They just don't put it on the box.
So what's in the Grassrivers after dark?
Now it's me guessin', and I'll label it that way.
Confirmed: Rockstar has shown us a sawgrass swamp with airboats, gators on the deck and gators in the water, a gas station with a gator in it, and Mount Kalaga's woods with a big cat at the waterin' hole. Confirmed: nothing in any of it is spooky. It's all daylight and sunburn. I went through the wildlife in last week's piece and there's not a hint of a myth in the lot.
But look at what Florida gives 'em to work with. The real Everglades have a skunk ape, which is Bigfoot with worse hygiene, and people down there will tell you about it with a straight face. Every swamp in the South has a light that moves across the water at night that nobody can explain. Florida's got more missin'-person stories per square mile of swamp than anywhere I know of, and a whole Gothic tradition of what lives in the houses at the end of the shell roads. Rockstar built a Night Folk out of Louisiana. I cannot imagine they looked at the Everglades and saw nothin'.
So here's what I'll be doin' the first night I have the game. Takin' an airboat into the Grassrivers at 11 PM by the game clock, cuttin' the engine, and waitin'. If there's a light on the water, I'll follow it. If there's a shack with no road to it, I'm goin' in. If somethin' on the thermal scope ain't a gator, I'm writin' about it the next mornin'.
That's the whole appeal. Rockstar's never once told you where the ghost is. They just build a swamp good enough that you go out there expectin' one.
Quick answers
Is there a ghost in GTA 5?
Yes. Stand on the top of Mount Gordo between 11 PM and midnight in-game and a woman in white appears over the word JOCK written in blood. She is Jolene Cranley-Evans, wife of Jock Cranley, and the story the game tells is that he pushed her.
Is Bigfoot in GTA 5?
Twice, sort of. In the stranger mission The Last One, Franklin hunts a Sasquatch that turns out to be a man in a suit. In the mission Predator, Michael's thermal scope can catch a heat signature in the trees that fades before you can reach it. Bigfoot was never actually in San Andreas, whatever the playground said.
Will GTA 6 have horror easter eggs?
Rockstar has shown none. Nothing in the trailers, the Extended Look or the official screenshots points to a ghost, a myth or a killer. Given the last three Rockstar games, it would be a surprise if Leonida had nothing in the swamp.
What is Undead Nightmare?
A 2010 expansion for the first Red Dead Redemption that turned the whole map into a zombie plague, with John Marston riding out to cure it. It is still the only time Rockstar has made a full horror game.

An economist says 1.5 million Americans will skip work on November 19 and cost the country a billion dollars. A staffing firm says absence nearly doubles on launch day. Vox reads both reports properly, finds one number that is real and one that is a vibe, and explains why your boss already knows your plan.

Oct 21, 2026 · opinion · By EveJason and Lucia are a couple, not a co-op: what GTA 6's romance actually is, and who is really in charge
Rockstar built GTA 6 around two people who might be in love, and then made the love optional. Eve reads the bios, the trailers and Rob Nelson's own words to work out what that means in play, why the Bonnie and Clyde comparison is more serious than it sounds, and which of the two is actually running this relationship.
