Will your console run GTA 6 well? PS5 vs PS5 Pro vs Series X vs Series S, the storage maths, and whether to upgrade the SSD before pre-load
Rockstar has published no performance targets for any console, so anyone quoting you a frame rate is guessing. Rolo goes through what is actually confirmed for each machine, how much drive space each one really has, and the one upgrade worth doing before November 12.

Short version first, because I know why you are here. Every console Rockstar has named will run GTA 6. Rockstar has published no resolution, no frame rate and no mode list for any of them, so anyone telling you the exact numbers is reading a fan chart, not a spec sheet. What you can plan for today is storage, and that is the part people get wrong.
I'm Rolo. I do the hardware on this site, and this is the piece I would want to read before I spent a penny.
What is actually confirmed, console by console
PlayStation 5. The platform all of Rockstar's footage was captured on: Trailer 2, the Extended Look and the launch trailer were all base PS5. If you own a launch-day PS5 or a Slim, you own the machine Rockstar chose to show the game on, which tells you it runs well enough there to put in front of 475 million people. Sony's own blog post in June said the game plays best on PS5, with the usual list of DualSense haptics, 3D audio and SSD loading. That is Sony's line, not Rockstar's, and it is marketing, not a benchmark.
PlayStation 5 Pro. The store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge, which means the game ships with some kind of Pro-specific improvement. What kind has not been said: no word on resolution, PSSR upscaling, ray tracing or a performance mode. If you already have a Pro, good. If you are thinking of buying one for this game, wait for Rockstar to say what the badge buys you.
Xbox Series X. Listed as a launch platform with the game optimised for Series X|S on the Xbox Store. No targets published. It has the most usable storage of the three base machines, which is its practical advantage right now.
Xbox Series S. In, and listed together with the X. Nothing has been said about how it compares, and nothing has been said about any console, so do not read silence as bad news. The real Series S issue is the drive, and we have a whole story on that.
About that frame rate
Reported, not confirmed: Digital Foundry expects 30 fps on both PS5 and PS5 Pro, because a game simulating a city this dense is limited by the CPU, and the Pro has the same CPU as the base console. That is a well-informed guess from people who measure this for a living, and it is still a guess. The console comparison graphic that went round last week with 1440p and 4K numbers on it was invented by a social media account, as Six covered in the one-month-to-go piece.
My own read: Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at 30 fps on the consoles it launched on and nobody remembers it as a bad-looking game. If GTA 6 is 30 fps and rock solid, that is a fine outcome. If a 60 fps mode exists on Pro, Rockstar will tell us, probably close to November 12.
The storage maths
This is the bit you can act on. Rockstar has not published an install size. The PlayStation listing shows none, the Xbox listing shows a placeholder, and estimates from outlets run from 120 to 200 GB. Red Dead 2 was 105 GB, so the top of that range is believable. Add a day-one patch and plan for 200 to 250 GB free.
Now what you actually have, after the system takes its cut:
- PS5 (825 GB): about 667 GB usable. The game fits with room to spare unless you are already full, and most people are already full.
- PS5 Slim (1 TB): about 848 GB usable. Same story, more room.
- PS5 Pro (2 TB): roughly 1.8 TB usable. Not a worry.
- Xbox Series X (1 TB): about 802 GB usable. Comfortable.
- Xbox Series S (512 GB): about 364 GB usable. The game is more than half the drive. If you have Call of Duty installed, something is coming off.
- Xbox Series S (1 TB): about 802 GB usable, same as the X.
Do the clear-out this week, not on November 12. Deleting games is fast; downloading 200 GB is not, and the download guide has the times by connection speed.
Should you add an SSD?
Only if the numbers above say so. If you are a Series S owner with 80 GB free, or a PS5 owner who refuses to delete anything, yes, and do it before pre-load so the game lands on the new drive first time.
PS5 and PS5 Pro. The internal expansion slot takes a standard PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 drive, 250 GB to 8 TB, and Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster. It must have a heatsink, either built in or bolted on, and it must fit the slot's size limits, which almost every 2280 drive does. Fitting takes a screwdriver and about ten minutes, and the console formats it for you. Games run from the expansion drive at full speed. A 1 TB drive from a known brand is the sensible buy; prices move around, so check before you order.
Xbox Series X and S. Different approach. Internal drives are not user-replaceable; instead there is a slot on the back for a Storage Expansion Card, made by Seagate and Western Digital in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Plug it in, done, and games run from it exactly as from the internal drive. They cost more per gigabyte than a PS5 M.2 drive, which is the trade-off for not needing a screwdriver. A cheaper option is an ordinary USB external drive, but note the catch: Series X|S games can be stored on it, not played from it. You can park your other games there to free the internal drive for GTA 6, and that is a perfectly good plan.
Whatever you buy, buy it in time to install before November 12. Pre-load is a week long for a reason.
What I'd do
Own a PS5 or Series X with 250 GB free: nothing. You are ready. Own a Series S: clear the drive now, and if that hurts, a 1 TB expansion card or a USB drive for the overflow. Own a Pro: sit tight and enjoy whatever the badge turns out to mean. Thinking of buying a console for this game: the base PS5 is the machine Rockstar built the showcase on, and until it says otherwise, that is the safe answer.
I will update this page the day Rockstar publishes performance targets or an install size. Until then, the launch guide has the checklist.
Quick answers
Does GTA 6 run better on PS5 Pro?
The PlayStation Store listing carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced badge, so the Pro gets something extra. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has said what. No resolution or frame-rate figures have been published for any console.
What frame rate is GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox?
Not announced. Digital Foundry's expectation is 30 fps on PS5 and PS5 Pro because of CPU load, and every piece of official footage was captured on a base PS5. Treat any specific number going round as a guess until Rockstar says otherwise.
Will GTA 6 fit on my console?
Rockstar has not published the install size; estimates run from 120 to 200 GB. Usable space is about 667 GB on a launch PS5, 802 GB on a Series X, 364 GB on a 512 GB Series S and roughly 1.8 TB on a 2 TB PS5 Pro. Clear 200 to 250 GB.
Should I buy an SSD for GTA 6?
Only if you are out of room. A PS5 takes a PCIe 4.0 M.2 drive with a heatsink, 5,500 MB/s recommended, fitted in minutes. Xbox Series X and S use the Storage Expansion Card slot. Buy it before November 12 so the pre-load goes straight onto it.

Rockstar built GTA 6 around two people who might be in love, and then made the love optional. Eve reads the bios, the trailers and Rob Nelson's own words to work out what that means in play, why the Bonnie and Clyde comparison is more serious than it sounds, and which of the two is actually running this relationship.
