Rockstar union vote set for November 12 to 26: UK staff decide on recognition during GTA 6 launch week

Rockstar's UK developers will vote on whether to formally recognise their union between November 12 and November 26, 2026. The window opens on the day GTA 6 pre-load begins and closes a week after the game launches on November 19. The dates come from a statement by the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB), whose Rockstar branch organises the company's UK offices. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier reported them on October 27, followed the same day by Engadget, GameSpot, GamesRadar and Game Developer.

Nothing about the game changes. Launch is still November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, pre-load still opens November 12, and the Standard and Ultimate editions are still $79.99 and $99.99. This is a story about the people making GTA 6, not the release.

What the vote decides

Confirmed. Staff are voting on a recognition agreement that, according to the reports, came out of several months of talks between the union and Rockstar management. If it passes, the union would be formally recognised and would have a say on pay and bonuses, overtime, redundancies, flexible and remote working, and the company's policies on generative AI. Engadget and GameSpot both note it would become the largest recognised union in the UK games industry.

Not yet known. None of the reports give the number of eligible staff, the threshold needed to pass, or when the result will be announced after voting closes on November 26. We will update this page when those details are public.

Why the dates matter

Rockstar North in Edinburgh leads development on GTA 6, and the union covers all of the company's UK offices, so the people voting are largely the people finishing the game. The union is framing it as two moments in two weeks: the biggest release in the company's history, and a decision on how its studios are run.

Our guess. We do not expect this to touch your launch week at all. Pre-load, unlock times and day-one play are handled by the storefronts, and Rockstar's plans for November 12 to 19 were set long before this ballot was scheduled. Our launch week calendar has the dates that do affect you.

The background

In October 2025 Rockstar dismissed 31 UK employees, most of them union members or involved in organising. The IWGB called the firings union busting and took the case to an employment tribunal in Scotland. Rockstar has said throughout that the staff were dismissed for misconduct involving sharing confidential information, and for no other reason. The tribunal was due to finish in October but was extended; GameSpot and Engadget report closing arguments are expected on November 17 and 18, the two days before launch.

What Rockstar has said

Rockstar has not issued a statement on the vote itself. Its clearest public position came this month, when head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe told Bloomberg's Jason Schreier that the company follows its staff: "if they want a union, they will have a union." We read that as Rockstar signalling it will not fight a yes vote. Until the result is in, that is our reading, not a commitment.

We covered Bloomberg's feature on the making of GTA 6 on October 14. For the dates that matter to players, start with the launch guide.
