GTA 6 has two playable leads and lets you switch between them. The Extended Look showed how: instantly when Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos are together, with a short transition when they are apart. Confirmed
How it works
When the two are together, switching is instant, from driver to passenger in the middle of a chase. When they are apart, the swap takes a few seconds and the camera travels to wherever the other one is; one cut goes from Lucia base-jumping to Jason on the couch. Some jobs are for one character only.
A gameplay system, not just a story device
The pair is also a lead in the police system (Police leads), and Rob Nelson says the relationship changes how the story plays without ever splitting them up. See Jason and Lucia.
