Does GTA 6 have a weapon wheel? Yes, and Rockstar spent years trying to replace it

GTA 6 has a weapon wheel. It nearly didn't: Jason Schreier's new video says Rockstar spent months, if not years, on a Red Dead-style limited loadout before going back to the wheel. Plus narrower streets than GTA V and artists who have been on the game since 2015.

Yes, GTA 6 has a weapon wheel. It very nearly did not.

On October 19, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier posted a video of the details from his Rockstar North visit that did not fit into his making-of feature from last week. The one that matters most on the controller: Rockstar spent a long stretch of development trying to build a weapon system closer to Red Dead Redemption 2, where you cannot carry every gun at once, then gave up and went back to the wheel GTA players know. The wheel in the Extended Look is the one you get on November 19.

What Rockstar tried instead

The aim, according to Schreier, was loadouts that felt more grounded than GTA V's bottomless pockets. Red Dead Redemption 2 does it with the horse: a couple of guns on Arthur, the rest in the saddle. GTA 6 was going to do the same with the car. Jason and Lucia would carry a limited set of weapons, and the rest of the arsenal would live in the vehicle, which turned every ride into a mobile locker.

That created a UI problem. Rob Nelson, who heads development at Rockstar North, worried that a classic wheel full of empty slots would keep reminding players of the guns they were not allowed to hold. So the team tried to replace it. Schreier says they spent months, if not years, on alternatives: trays, webs, other layouts, and a version with no wheel at all.

None of them beat the original. The final game uses a weapon wheel again, and Schreier files the whole detour under the difficult period that ended around late 2022 or early 2023, when the game started coming together. The first trailer in December 2023 then gave the studio a clear picture of what it was making. We covered the rest of that timeline, including the two delays, in the Bloomberg feature story.

Worth noting: a locker is still in. The Vintage Vice City Pack and the Ultimate Edition both reference a weapon locker at the safehouse, so storage is part of the game. It just is not what limits what you carry.

Nobody has the whole game in their head

The second thread is about how Rockstar fills a world. Aaron Garbut, who leads art at Rockstar North, is quoted saying there is no one person who has the whole thing in their head. Artists and designers get room to add the details they find interesting, which is how Red Dead Redemption 2 ended up with touches nobody at the top asked for. Schreier expects GTA 6 to be full of the same, which is good news for anyone planning to spend months in Leonida after the story is done.

Narrower streets, longer careers

Two smaller details. Rockstar studied real Miami when it laid out Vice City and chose streets significantly narrower than GTA V's Los Santos. That makes the city denser and more convincing, but it also means far more buildings to fill the space, and Garbut says it is the kind of early choice that comes back to bite you years later. If you want to see what that density looks like block by block, our Vice City neighbourhoods guide walks it.

And some artists have been on the project since 2015 or earlier. By launch day a few of them will have spent more than eleven years on a single game.

What has not changed

None of this touches the launch facts. GTA 6 is still scheduled for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026, pre-load opens November 12, and no PC version has been announced. If you want to see the weapon wheel in action, the 26-minute Extended Look is the place, and our breakdown has the full combat section.

A limited loadout closer to Red Dead Redemption 2: a few guns on Jason or Lucia, the rest stored in the car, with trays, webs and no-wheel layouts tested for picking a weapon. None worked better than the wheel.
