GTA 6 is eligible for The Game Awards 2026, with one day to spare

The Game Awards has published its 2026 cutoff: games must be commercially available by November 20 at 9 PM PT. GTA 6 launches November 19, so it qualifies, but the jury still decides whether it is nominated.

The Game Awards has published the rules for 2026, and Grand Theft Auto VI makes the cutoff by a single day. The show's FAQ says a game must be commercially available by Friday, November 20, 2026, at 9 PM PT to be eligible. GTA 6 launches on November 19, so it qualifies for this year's show, which takes place on December 10 in Los Angeles.

What this does and does not mean

Being eligible is not the same as being nominated. The rule only decides which year a game belongs to. The nominees themselves are picked by the show's voting jury, and The Game Awards has not announced any nominations yet, so nobody outside the organisation knows how GTA 6 will be treated.

It also does not mean the game is guaranteed to win anything. That is the part some of this week's headlines skip. It means GTA 6 is in the 2026 pool alongside everything else released this year, and the decision comes down to the jury and, for the fan-vote categories, the public.

Why the timing matters

For most of the year the open question was whether a November 19 launch would be too late. Earlier this month, before the rules were published, fan sites were working from last year's pattern, when the cutoff fell on the third Friday of November. This year that pattern would give November 20, and the published FAQ confirms it.

The practical problem is playtime, not eligibility. GTA 6 is a very large game, and the window between launch and the December 10 ceremony is three weeks. Reports that reviewers will get copies before the end of October are unconfirmed, and neither Rockstar nor Geoff Keighley has said how the game will be shown at the ceremony. One outlet also reports a later cutoff of November 30 for the Players' Voice category, but we only found that in a single source, so treat it as unverified.

The one-day margin

The cutoff is a good reminder of how little room the schedule has. A delay of even two days would move the game out of this year's awards. Nothing suggests that is on the table: Rockstar has the launch trailer out, pre-orders open and pre-load scheduled for November 12, and we looked at what Rockstar's own people said about late changes in today's other story. The full timeline of the earlier slips is in our release date history.

Quick answers

Is GTA 6 eligible for The Game Awards 2026?

Yes. The Game Awards FAQ sets the 2026 cutoff at November 20, 2026, 9 PM PT, and GTA 6 launches November 19. That is a margin of one day.

Does eligibility mean GTA 6 will be nominated?

No. Eligibility only means the game can be considered. Nominees are chosen by the show's voting jury, and The Game Awards has not announced any nominations.

When is The Game Awards 2026?

Thursday, December 10, 2026, in Los Angeles, 21 days after GTA 6 launches.

What happens if GTA 6 is delayed past November 20?

It would no longer be eligible for the 2026 show and would fall into the following year's awards, as any game released after the cutoff does.
