Rockstar was still changing GTA 6 “within the last few months” — what that means with 34 days to go
Rockstar's director of technology Phil Hooker says the team was still changing Grand Theft Auto VI in the final months before launch. It is not a sign of a third delay, and here is why.

A line from Rockstar's director of technology, Phil Hooker, went around the internet on Friday and set off a small panic: the team was still changing Grand Theft Auto VI within the last few months. With 34 days to go, that reads like bad news. It is not, and the context makes that fairly clear.
The quote comes from Jason Schreier's reporting trip to Rockstar North, published on October 14 as a Bloomberg feature and as a video on his own channel. We covered the feature itself in Rockstar on GTA 6's long road. What spread this week is one specific part of it.
What Hooker actually said
Hooker's point is about how Rockstar works, not about the schedule. He describes a game that is "never completely settled" and a studio that does not work from a fixed blueprint, and then adds that the team changed things even in the final stretch.
That is ordinary for a game of this size. The November 19 build has been in bug-fixing, balancing and polish for a long time, and "changes" at this stage means tuning a mission, cutting something that is not good enough, or adjusting how a system feels — not adding features. Nothing in the reporting suggests otherwise, and nothing in it mentions the release date being at risk.
Why this is not a third delay
The more useful quote is the one about how the second delay was decided. Hooker says the call came when it became clear some areas were not going to make it, and frames the trade-off plainly: the team could have hit the earlier schedule, but it would not have been the game they wanted to ship.
That decision is already behind us. It produced the move to November 19, which Rockstar has now backed with a launch trailer, open pre-orders and a published pre-load date. Schreier, who has broken every GTA 6 date story so far, says in the video that the game is imminent and that it is actually going to happen — hedged, as he always hedges, but that is as close to a straight answer as anyone outside Rockstar has.

Has it gone gold?
Not as far as anyone knows. Rockstar has not said the game has gone gold, and some headlines this week have implied it without a source. Going gold means the launch build is finished and handed off for manufacturing and store delivery; it is usually announced, and Rockstar has not announced it.
What we can say is that the marketing is behaving like a company that is done: the launch trailer arrived on October 15, pre-load opens November 12, and store listings are live. Read it as a strong signal, not a confirmation.
The part that actually explains the eight years
Buried in the same reporting is a better story than the panic one. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson says the early projections for the game's NPC work were "horrifying" — the crowds of Leonida needed far more people, tools and pipeline work than the studio had resourced for, which is a large part of why an entire Los Angeles team ended up dedicated to populating the state.
Open-world writing director James Horton puts the ambition in one line: nobody you meet is an extra, and everyone is the main character of their own story. That is the kind of goal that quietly eats years, and it lines up with what the Extended Look showed in August.
What has not changed
November 19, 2026. Pre-load on November 12. $79.99 Standard, $99.99 Ultimate, with the Vintage Vice City Pack for pre-orders placed before November 20. Our launch guide has the unlock times by region and the pre-load checklist covers the storage question.
Thirty-four days. If Rockstar is still nudging things, that is what the last month is for.
Quick answers
Is GTA 6 delayed again?
No. The release date is still November 19, 2026. Rockstar has not announced any change, and the quotes going around this week are about work done months ago, not about the schedule.
What did Rockstar change recently?
Rockstar has not said. Phil Hooker only says the team changed things within the last few months, without naming anything specific. Late changes on a game this size are normally tuning, balancing and cutting unfinished pieces rather than new features.
Has GTA 6 gone gold?
Rockstar has not announced it. Going gold means the launch build is finished and sent for manufacturing and store delivery. The launch trailer landing on October 15 suggests the build is close to locked, but that is an inference, not a confirmation.
Where do these quotes come from?
Jason Schreier's Bloomberg feature on the making of GTA 6, published October 14, 2026, and his YouTube video of the same reporting trip to Rockstar North. Outlets picked up the "still changing things" line on October 16.
