Opinion: it is 2026, and PC players are still being sent to the GTA 6 waiting room
GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and PC players get nothing but a rumour about early 2027. Rockstar has made PC wait for every big launch since 2001. My take: in 2026 that habit is a business choice dressed up as tradition, and it has aged badly.

Before anyone emails: this is a take, not a report. The facts come with their sources. The opinions are mine, and PC players are welcome to frame them.
In 34 days, Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, it comes out on a date nobody will tell you. That is not a joke I made up. It is the official position: Rockstar has not announced a PC version, a PC date, or a single line of PC system requirements.
The closest thing PC players have to a release date is a rumour. On October 13, GamesBeat reported that four industry sources independently pointed to the first three months of 2027. Rockstar did not respond. So the best case, if you play on a computer, is that you get the biggest game of the decade somewhere between two and five months after everyone else has finished the story, posted the ending, and moved on to arguing about the ending.
I have thought about this carefully, and I have decided it is ridiculous.
Rockstar has done this every single time
To be fair to Rockstar, nobody can accuse it of being inconsistent. PC has waited for every major launch since GTA III:
- GTA III: PS2 in October 2001, PC in May 2002.
- Vice City: PS2 in October 2002, PC in May 2003.
- San Andreas: PS2 in October 2004, PC in June 2005.
- GTA IV: consoles in April 2008, PC in December 2008.
- GTA V: PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013, PC in April 2015, about nineteen months later.
- Red Dead Redemption 2: consoles in October 2018, PC in November 2019.
Twenty-five years, six games, one policy. If GTA 6 lands on PC in early 2027, it will actually be one of the shorter waits in the series' history. That is how low the bar has been set.
Why it made sense once
There was a time when this was defensible. In 2001 the PS2 was where the audience was, and PC gaming was a pile of driver problems and minimum specs nobody met. In 2008 the GTA IV port was famous for running badly on hardware that should have handled it. Building for two fixed consoles first and porting later was, for a long time, the sensible order of operations.
And credit where it is due: the late ports have usually been the best version. GTA V on PC added 60 frames per second, 4K and the Rockstar Editor, and it is the version that kept the game alive through a decade of modding and roleplay servers. Red Dead 2 on PC was gorgeous. PC players have historically been paid for their patience.
Why it does not make sense now
The thing is, the world those reasons came from is gone.
Microsoft puts its own games on PC on day one. Sony, a company whose entire business is selling you a PlayStation, now ports its exclusives to Steam. Most big multiplatform releases launch on PC alongside the consoles as a matter of routine. The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are, under the hood, close relatives of a PC. A modern console-first strategy is not a technical limitation. It is a decision.
And it is fairly obvious what that decision is for. If you make PC wait, a lot of people who own both buy the console version now and the PC version later. Some PC-only players give up and buy a console. Some of them buy it twice. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has said the company's games "eventually come to all platforms", which is a sentence that does a lot of work with the word eventually.
There is a less cynical reading. Rockstar delayed GTA 6 twice and, by its own account, kept changing things late. A studio that has been crunching to land on two consoles might reasonably want to ship the PC version when it is ready rather than when it is due. Fine. But then say so. Give PC players a window, a spec sheet and a reason. Silence a month before launch is not a strategy, it is a shrug.
The cost of waiting in 2026
The real damage is not the wait. It is what the wait does to the experience.
A game this size is now a shared event. Launch week is when the clips go viral, the theories are fresh, the feeds are full and the city feels new to everyone at once. PC players will spend that week dodging spoilers on every platform they use. By the time they get to Vice City, the map is charted, the secrets are wikis and the jokes are old. That is not the same game, even if the files are identical.
There is also a safety issue nobody talks about enough. The longer the gap, the bigger the market for fake GTA 6 PC downloads, cracks and APKs. There is no PC version. Every one of those is a scam or worse. If you see one, do not click it.
What I would like Rockstar to do
Not much, honestly. Announce the PC version. Give it a window, even a vague one. Publish the requirements so people can plan an upgrade instead of guessing. And if the PC version really is the definitive edition again, tell us what it adds so the wait at least feels like it is buying something.
What PC players should do in the meantime
Do not buy a console out of spite unless you actually want one. Do not download anything that claims to be GTA 6 for PC. Do watch the launch trailer, learn the map, and complain about all of this loudly, which works perfectly well on a PC.
For everyone else, the launch guide has the unlock times. Enjoy it. Try not to spoil the ending for the people still in the waiting room.
