GTA 6 on Xbox Series S: what is confirmed, and the storage maths

GTA 6 plays on Xbox Series S; Rockstar lists Series X|S together. What is not known is how it performs there. What is known is the storage squeeze: a 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB usable for a game estimated at 120 to 200 GB.

Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to Xbox Series S. That is settled by Rockstar's platform list, which has read PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S since the reveal. What the Series S version looks like is not settled at all, because Rockstar has published no performance targets for any platform. Here is what can and cannot be said.

What is confirmed

The platform. The price, $79.99 Standard and $99.99 Ultimate, the same as everywhere else. Pre-load from November 12 on the Xbox Store. The boxed Standard Edition as a download code rather than a disc. Everything else about the Series S, resolution, frame rate, load times, is unannounced, and so is the equivalent for Series X and PS5. All of Rockstar's public footage was captured on a base PlayStation 5.

The storage squeeze

This is the real planning question. A 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB usable. Rockstar has not published an install size; the PlayStation listing shows none and the Xbox listing shows a 328 MB placeholder, and estimates run from 120 to 200 GB, larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's 105 GB. Add a day-one patch and the recommended cushion of 200 to 250 GB is most of the drive. Decide now what comes off, or plan on an expansion card. The download-size story has download times by connection speed.

Unlock times

Microsoft has not published a regional unlock schedule. The PlayStation Store's own availability timestamps, compiled by fans as of September 11, are the only public ones, and Xbox normally mirrors PlayStation's regional timing. Changing an Xbox console's region to reach an earlier unlock has been reported to work only once the pre-load is finished, is not sanctioned, and can be closed at any time. See unlock times by region.

What to watch for

Two things should land before November 12: a real install size on the Xbox Store, and, with luck, Rockstar's performance targets per console. This story and the launch guide will be updated when either appears. For the broader platform picture, including the missing PC version, see why GTA 6 is current-gen only.

Quick answers

Does GTA 6 run on Xbox Series S?

Yes. Rockstar lists Xbox Series X|S as a launch platform. Resolution and frame-rate targets for either Xbox have not been published.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

A 512 GB Series S has about 364 GB usable. With the install estimated at 120 to 200 GB plus a day-one patch, it fits, but it takes most of the drive.

Is there an Xbox pre-load schedule for GTA 6?

Pre-load opens November 12 on both Xbox and PlayStation. Microsoft has not published regional unlock times; the PlayStation Store's timestamps are the only ones public so far.
