Hypothetical: what happens to GTA Online after GTA 6? Four futures, ranked
Take-Two says GTA Online will be supported after GTA 6 launches and beyond. Nobody has said what that looks like. This is a what-if piece: four possible futures for GTA Online, which one we think is likeliest, and what would change our mind.

Let us be clear up front: this is a what-if. Everything past the facts is a guess, and we say so each time. Rockstar has not announced any plans for GTA Online beyond what is quoted here.
Grand Theft Auto V came out in September 2013. Its online mode is now thirteen years old, and it is about to share a calendar with the biggest launch in the history of the franchise. The question every long-time player is asking is the same: what happens to GTA Online when GTA 6 arrives on November 19?
What we actually know
Not much, but not nothing.
Support is promised. Take-Two said at its September 17 shareholder meeting, as reported by ResetEra, that GTA 6 is a single-player title and that Rockstar will keep supporting GTA Online after its release and beyond. That is a secondhand report of the meeting, so the exact wording may differ.
There is no GTA 6 online mode on the table, yet. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has reported that Take-Two has not discussed what a new GTA Online would look like and is not planning to soon. Rockstar has not announced one.
The old game is not dying. In August, Take-Two said GTA V has sold in more than 230 million copies and called it the best-selling title of the past decade. In 2025, Take-Two said new GTA Online player accounts grew more than 50 percent year on year after the second GTA 6 trailer. In August 2026 it also said it was pleased with Rockstar Mission Creator, the toolset that lets players build their own GTA Online content.
That is the evidence. Everything else is a guess. Here are four of them.
Future one: the quiet sunset
The idea: Rockstar's best developers move to GTA 6 support and its first expansion. GTA Online slides into maintenance mode: servers stay up, security gets patched, and the big yearly updates shrink into small seasonal events.
Why it could happen: every studio has a finite number of people. GTA 6 will need patches, a stream of fixes and probably story content.
Why it probably will not, at least not fast: GTA Online is a huge, steady earner. A company that reports recurring spending as a major part of its business does not usually switch that off while it is still growing.
Future two: the long tail
The idea: GTA Online keeps getting updates, just fewer and smaller. A summer drop, a winter drop, some limited-time events, new cars and some free content to keep the lights on. The Mission Creator keeps players building things.
Why we think it is the likeliest: it matches what Take-Two actually said, which is "continue", not "grow". It also costs little. The infrastructure, the audience and the shop all already exist.
What it feels like: a game in its twilight years that still has a very large audience logging in on a Friday night.
Future three: the bridge
The idea: GTA Online becomes the on-ramp to whatever comes next. Rockstar uses it to tease the setting, the characters or the tools of the next online experience. Maybe in-game events nod at Vice City. Maybe a creator tool carries over.
Why it could happen: Gfinity attributed the 2025 jump in new GTA Online accounts partly to the second GTA 6 trailer, which is its interpretation of Take-Two's numbers. If that link is real, Rockstar has an obvious reason to keep the two games talking to each other.
Why it might not: Schreier's reporting says nobody is planning the next online mode yet. A bridge needs something on the other side of it.
Future four: the big merge
The idea: at some point, years from now, Rockstar launches a new online game set in Leonida, and GTA Online is wound down or folded into it, with some form of carry-over.
Why it is the most dramatic: it is also the least supported. No source we found says this is planned, and Take-Two's wording about supporting the old game "and beyond" does not point toward a quick replacement.
What it would mean: a decade of cars, apartments, businesses and clothing being either carried over, converted or abandoned. If that is ever announced, expect it to be the biggest fight the community has ever had.
What would change our minds
We will update this page if any of these happen:
- Rockstar announces a GTA 6 online mode or a date for one.
- A major GTA Online update lands in the weeks around the GTA 6 launch, which would suggest the team is still large and busy.
- A long gap with no content, which would point to future one.
- Take-Two's earnings calls start describing GTA Online differently, for example calling it "mature" or "stable".
The next earnings call is the one to watch. It is where the company talks about recurring spending, and it is where a change in tone would show first.
What to do if you play GTA Online
Nothing, really. There is no shutdown announced, no deadline and no reason to rush. Play it if you enjoy it. Keep your progress. And if you have been waiting for a reason to finally try it, it is going to be busy while everyone waits for GTA 6.
For everything that is actually confirmed about the new game, the launch guide is the place to start.
Quick answers
Is GTA Online shutting down when GTA 6 launches?
No. Take-Two said at its September 17, 2026 shareholder meeting, as reported by ResetEra, that Rockstar will keep supporting GTA Online after GTA 6 launches and beyond. Nothing has been announced about a shutdown.
Will GTA 6 have an online mode?
Rockstar has not announced one. Jason Schreier of Bloomberg has reported that Take-Two has not discussed what a new GTA Online would look like and is not planning to soon. Any GTA 6 online mode is speculation.
Is this article an official announcement or a leak?
No. It is a hypothetical, opinion-based piece. Every future described here is a guess. The facts are attributed to their sources and the scenarios are ours.
How well is GTA V still selling?
Take-Two said in August 2026 that GTA V has sold in more than 230 million copies across three console generations, and called it the best-selling title of the past decade by both units and dollars.
