When do GTA 6 reviews come out? What we know with 33 days to go

Reports say GTA 6 reviews will go live before the November 19 launch, with review copies reaching critics by the end of October. Rockstar has confirmed none of it. Here is what is reported, what is not, and how to avoid spoilers while the embargo lasts.

With 33 days to go, the next big question after "what time does it unlock" is "what will the critics say". The short answer: reviews are reportedly coming before launch, but Rockstar has not said when, and nobody outside the company has a confirmed date.

This is a report-based story, so here is exactly what is known and what is not.

What has been reported

Three things have gone around this week:

  • Reviews before launch. Insider Gaming reported that a review embargo is expected to lift ahead of the November 19 release. It said it had learned a preliminary embargo time but would not publish it because the plan could change. The original article has since been taken down, which is a reason to treat the exact claim with care.
  • Review copies by the end of October. Insider NateTheHate, who has a good track record with Rockstar news, said on ResetEra that copies are expected to reach reviewers before October ends. Notebookcheck reads that as critics getting roughly three weeks with the game.
  • Console only. Review copies would be for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, the only platforms GTA 6 is launching on.

What has not been confirmed

Rockstar has not announced a review date, an embargo time or a review-copy schedule. Its official page lists only the release date and the two platforms.

There was also an earlier claim, from a single journalist on a podcast, that Rockstar would not send review codes at all and would instead invite a few outlets to play at a secured location. Nothing since has confirmed it, and the newer reports point the other way. It is worth remembering that this one never had official backing either.

And the two dates are separate. A critic can have the game for weeks and still be forbidden to publish a word until the embargo ends. "Review copies in October" does not mean "reviews in October".

Why a pre-launch review would matter

For most big releases, the review embargo is the day everyone decides whether to pre-load or cancel. For GTA 6, with the pre-load opening on November 12 and the game unlocking at midnight Eastern on November 19, reviews that land before launch would give players a chance to read opinions on a finished build, not just on the trailers.

It also feeds the awards conversation. A pre-launch critical consensus helps explain why the game is expected to be a major contender, as we covered in GTA 6 and The Game Awards 2026.

The spoiler problem

Here is the catch. The longer critics hold the game, the more chances there are for a leak. Notebookcheck notes that 2026 has already had pre-embargo footage leaks, and that the lack of a physical disc should reduce the risk, but not remove it.

If you want to avoid spoilers until you are playing:

  • Mute keywords on every app you use: Jason, Lucia, Mendez, ending, spoiler, and the names of any story characters you see trending.
  • Read reviews, do not watch clips. A written review under embargo is trained to stay spoiler light. A thumbnail with a screaming face is not.
  • Stick to outlets you trust. Fake review pages and "leaked GTA 6 download" links are already out there. If it offers a file, it is a scam.

What to expect and when

Nothing here is a promise. Embargo plans change in the final weeks, and Rockstar may simply announce its own schedule. The next things to watch are an official review-code announcement, Metacritic and OpenCritic placeholders turning into scores, and the first major outlet publishing.

We will update this when anything is confirmed. In the meantime, the launch guide has the unlock times, the pre-load date and everything else in one place.

Rockstar has not announced a review date or embargo. Reports from Insider Gaming and others say reviews are expected to go live before the November 19, 2026 launch, but no exact date is public.

When do reviewers get GTA 6?

Insider NateTheHate said on ResetEra that review copies are expected to go out before the end of October. Rockstar has not confirmed this, and review codes and publishing dates are separate things.

Not as far as we know. As of the most recent check the Metascore was still listed as tbd, because no reviews have been published.
