Opinion: GTA 6 should not make PC players wait 19 months — console-only is the old playbook

Opinion: a console-only launch leans on a proven audience, but PC is too big to park for 19 months. The case for an early GTA 6 PC release.

A case, not a news story. Our argument is that Rockstar should bring Grand Theft Auto VI to PC as close to the console launch as it can, and that a console-only release, the safe, proven route, is starting to look like the old way of launching a huge game. Rockstar has not announced a PC version. What follows is a view, not a report.

What is confirmed, and what is only reported

GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and our PC explainer covers what Rockstar has and has not said. The only talk of timing is a GamesBeat report, relayed by VGC, that a PC version is planned for the first quarter of 2027. It rests on four anonymous sources, and Rockstar did not respond to a request for comment. Treat it as a rumour with decent sourcing, not a date.

The case for going early

Rockstar's own track record is the console-first playbook. GTA V reached PC about 19 months after consoles, and Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13 months after. That made sense when PC was a smaller slice of the market. It looks less convincing now.

Take-Two's chief executive, Strauss Zelnick, has said that for a major title today PC can represent "45 to 50 percent of sales", against about 5 percent when he joined the company. He was speaking about Take-Two's games in general, not GTA 6, but a figure like that is hard to square with a year-long wait. And the PC audience for Grand Theft Auto is not hypothetical: GTA V peaked at around 300,000 players at once on Steam in 2015, beating the record Skyrim had held since 2011.

There is also the part of GTA that lives on PC. The roleplay servers and mod scene around GTA V grew for years, and Rockstar bought Cfx.re, the team behind FiveM, in 2023. A Rockstar that wants user-created content in GTA 6 has every reason to want those players in the same ecosystem early, not eighteen months late.

The case against, fairly stated

Zelnick has said Rockstar launches on consoles first to serve its core audience, and platform holders value that window. A PC version also needs testing across a huge range of hardware, and the studio will not want to ship it half-finished after a launch it has delayed twice. All fair. Those are reasons to take a few months, though, not nineteen.

Where we land

If the Q1 2027 report is right, it is the sensible outcome: console players get the launch they have waited for, and PC arrives while the conversation is still loud. If it is wrong, the old gap looks like a habit more than a strategy. We would rather the rumour be right than see a large audience left waiting.

When Rockstar says anything official about PC, it will appear on the Newswire first, and we will cover it the same day.
